Penetration Testing
Vulnerability Assessment vs. Penetration Testing: What’s the Difference?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they answer different questions. A vulnerability assessment asks what weaknesses exist. A penetration test asks what an attacker could actually do with them.
Vulnerability assessment
A broad, largely automated review that identifies known vulnerabilities, missing patches and misconfigurations across many systems, then ranks them by severity.
- Wide coverage across your environment
- Can run frequently, such as monthly or quarterly
- Results need review to rule out false positives
Penetration testing
A focused, hands-on exercise in which testers attempt to exploit weaknesses within an agreed scope to show real-world impact.
- Depth rather than breadth
- Shows how individual issues can be chained together
- Typically performed yearly or after major changes
Which do you need?
Most organizations benefit from both. Regular vulnerability assessments keep known issues visible and under control, while periodic penetration tests confirm your defenses hold up against a determined attacker. If you're just starting out, an assessment is often the right first step: it gives you a baseline to fix before deeper testing.
